Burgers: with cheese, without pickle, raw, vegetarian, with ketchup, accompanied by a gin & tonic...there are a thousand different flavours and as many combinations as there are palates. One of the dishes that has had the most impact and fame in the world and that today we can find both in fast food restaurants and in restaurants with Michelin stars. After all, who doesn't like a good burger?

The first hamburger?

GERMANY VS UNITED STATES

During the 19th century in Hamburg, Germany, the Hamburg steak gained popularity. At that time, there were many Germans who were emigrating to the US and they took the recipe with them. We do not know who was the first person to prepare a hamburger, but what is known is that—from 1885 onwards—the native-born Hamburger Charlie Nagreen sold meatballs tucked between two pieces of bread during fairs at Seymour in Wisconsin. In that same year, the brothers, Frank and Charles Menches, began to serve a sandwich filled with minced meat in New York. In 1904, the Texan David Fletcher appeared at a world fair in St. Louis with a hamburger.

White Castle

The first restaurant that included a hamburger on its menu is the White Castle, which still exists. Founded in Kansas in 1921, they currently still have restaurants all over the country. One curious fact: White Castle does not work as a franchise, but rather, all the restaurants are owned by a single family, which demands consistent quality in each and every one of its premises

The best-selling hamburger in the world?

BIG MAC

The Big Mac, McDonalds’ elite hamburger, is the best-selling hamburger of all time. In Spain alone, it represents a turnover that reaches €659m as a result of the more than 20 million burgers consumed in the chain’s almost 400 establishments in our country.

As the saying goes, there is no accounting for tastes or favourite colours. However, here are five recommended places that you ought to visit to try out their star product: THE HAMBURGER.

Berlin: Burgermeister.

An old public restroom turned into a hamburger bar? Yes, that's right; it is located in the Kreuzberg district, on Oberbaumstr. 8 to be precise and it is one of the meeting points for Berliners. If you go, you have to try the Meisterburger: 180 grams of meat seasoned with caramelized onion, bacon, barbecue sauce and mustard.

London: Honest Burgers

A hamburger bar that has more than 20 outlets just in the city of London alone, as well as many more spread all over the country and, with plans to open new ones, it cannot fail. The recommended variety here is named after the bar, Honest, and it comes with cheddar cheese, bacon, pickles, lettuce and red onion. The meat is from Yorkshire and the potatoes are seasoned with rosemary.

New York: Burger Joint

This place is impossible to find in the streets of the big city unless you know its history well, because it is located inside the hall of the Le Parker Meridien hotel, in the district of Manhattan. After passing the reception of the hotel you see, on the left, a queue of people next to a curtain, and, in the background, a hamburger-shaped neon sign that shows that you are in the correct queue. The fact that this place is so well hidden, means that we are not going to give anything else away, so you just have to discover it for yourself.

Tokyo: MOS.

Japan isn’t just sushi and ramen, it is much more and, as in everything they do, they offer maximum quality and enthusiasm. MOS Burger has already become Japan’s second biggest chain, after McDonald’s, and they are on the way to spreading to neighbouring countries. The chain has very demanding quality standards regarding the organic origin of the vegetables, selected by local farmers, and the meat is brought from Australia.
